Lucerne or Alfalfa, is a high protein forage crop grown either to cut and feed to livestock as fresh material, silage or cut, sun-dried and formed into convenient, palatable, dust free pellets. The nutritional composition of lucerne offers, in one ingredient, a balance of high quality protein with rumen by-pass qualities for dairy cows and ruminants and an energy source from both plant sugars (about 3% of dry matter only) and digestible fibre, plus a readily available calcium source.
These components make lucerne pellets an ideal protein source to balance cereals for all livestock. The fibre component makes lucerne an excellent supplement to feed to horses and ruminants where digestive physiology is dependent on good fibre intakes.
Caecal function is a key element in the health and well-being of horses, and a good reason to include Lucerne Pellets in their diet. Waste is minimised as stock cannot reject the high fibre stems which are so good for them.
